Corda enters the Signature Concordance through Nali Venn’s promise to her brother. She intends to return before the irrigation lamps dim. The lamps are scheduled to fail in nineteen minutes. Book I records intention and infrastructure at the same instant but supplies no verdict on either.
Local life
Local life
The habitat grows food under long banks of adjustable lamps whose cycles organize work, sleep, pollination, and public time. Residents say before dimming where another culture might name an hour. Lamp technicians therefore maintain both agricultural machinery and the community’s most argumentative clock.
Water need determines the fields. Narrow channels pass through homes, workshops, and one civic hall where meetings pause whenever the nutrient pumps change pitch. Children carry reflective tabs on their clothes during low-light shifts. Families keep personal lamps, but directing too much private light away from shared crops is treated as both waste and poor manners.
Reports and arguments
Reports and arguments
The Concordance does not say why the lamps will fail or whether Nali arrives. Local retellings blame procurement, weather, a migrating electrical organism, or somebody approving decorative illumination during planting season. All versions agree the promise was sincere. Corda distinguishes a failed promise from a lying one, although siblings retain appellate authority.
