Book I reveals Earth only through Ena’s memory. He recalls old comedies, films, fictional machines, heroic returns, and stories whose characters protect children or complain with unusual professional commitment. These references shape his jokes and ethical attention. They do not yet provide a history of the world itself.
Ena comes from Earth and brings its cultural debris into Kaiven: references nobody requested, explanations that arrive after annoyance, and the conviction that humor can sit beside grief without cancelling it. No Book I passage explains how he left, what Earth became, or what larger systems surrounded it.
Local life
Local life
At this reading point, Earth must remain larger than the handful of archived works Ena quotes. It held many climates, languages, peoples, coasts, cities, animals, tools, religions, injustices, meals, and conflicting descriptions of itself. Ena’s warm coastal background supplies one life among planetary multitudes.
Earth stories survive because people carried them, copied them, mistranslated them, loved them, and occasionally used them to delay a difficult conversation. Cultural memory is not a complete map. A joke can cross interstellar distance while the name of the person who first told it disappears.
Reports and arguments
Reports and arguments
Nothing else is safely public after Book I. This record does not speculate about Earth’s isolation, ancient history, off-world contact, later condition, or the route by which Ena left it. The silence here practices spoiler discipline while confident hats continue theorizing without supervision.
