Merrow’s Rest enters Book I for less than a second. Sevi Aran dies at three hundred and four with her hand around a blue ceramic cup. Her kettle finishes seven-tenths of a second later, switches off, and keeps the water warm in case circumstances improve. No protagonist sees this. The settlement receives equal narrative seriousness anyway.

The orbital community was designed for residents expecting several centuries of use. Apartments change function slowly; corridor gardens are planned by people who may live beneath the resulting canopy; appliance warranties include language about heirs. Long lives have not made residents patient with lifts, committee minutes, or anyone who says you have plenty of time while blocking a doorway.
Tea and heated mineral broths organize ordinary visits. Blue ceramics are common because local clay-glass survives the habitat’s thermal cycling, though merchants prefer the explanation that blue improves reflection. Death customs vary by household. Keeping water warm for an absent person is neither universal ritual nor forbidden sentiment. Sometimes a kettle is only better at waiting than the people nearby.

Nothing in Book I says what happened to Sevi’s cup, home, or water. Later residents may remember her as scholar, nuisance, relative, stranger, or the person who repeatedly corrected the orbital garden clock. The Atlas calls the event open. The Verse refuses to turn that openness into a promised mystery.
